DEFINITIONS
On our website and elsewhere we use the following terminology or descriptors.
EMBELLISHMENT and EMBELLISHED - Any form of customization to our offered products.
ONE SIDE / TWO SIDE - The location(s) of embellishment. Unless described otherwise, if a product is embellished on two sides, the embellishment is the same on both sides.
FRONT EMBELLISHMENT - Typically used to describe embellishment on a garment. Unless otherwise described, this embellishment is located on the left upper chest in an industry-standard location. This embellishment is typically 3" x 3" or smaller. However, some designs may be larger. Infant and toddler garments typically do not have a chest embellishment. The embellishment is placed in the center of the front in an industry-standard location.
BACK EMBELLISHMENT - Typically used to describe embellishment on a garment. Unless otherwise described, this embellishment is located on the back of a garment in an industry-standard location. This embellishment for an adult garment is typically 10" x 10" or smaller. Infant, toddler, and youth garment embellishment can range from 3" x 3" to 7.5" x 7.5".
Sublimation Dye Application
Pros - Quick Availability, Full Color & Economical. Very durable. The best value for white or light color polyester garments - Including the very popular polyester performance garments.
Cons - Limited to White or very light color 100% polyester garments. Does not print white. White will appear as the color of the garment.
Sublimination creates the softest decorative application. Our dyes are of the highest quality. Sublimation is an affordable full-color process perfect for small to medium needs where other decorative processes are costly.
This decorating process is for garments of mostly polyester fibers and light colors. This process does not print white but is full color. White will be the color of the garment. This process is very durable. Sublimation is the transition of a substance from the solid phase to the gaseous phase without changing into the liquid phase. This process uses extreme heat causing the printed dyes to saturate the garment and dyes the fabric. The feel of the process is undetectable by hand, meaning you do not feel any raised application or a change in the material. As with any embellishment process, abrasive cleaning products, acidic products, bleach products, and fabric softeners should be avoided as this will cause damage to the embellishment.
DTF Application
Direct To Film
Pros - Once setup is complete, it is typically quickly available, Full color (High Resolution) & Economical. There are few limitations to fabric colors or material.
Cons - Setup charges can apply if the artwork is not complete. The "hand" or softness of DTF embellishment is more noticeable than sublimation, similar to screen printed garments.
Keeping up with technology - The DTF process we use is the newest technology and is much softer than past versions.
This is a great solution for your custom apparel full-color graphics when you need high resolution such as photographs or multiple-color logos. And, the PERFECT SOLUTION for small quantity needs. DTF allows for fine detail and free-standing text, lightweight and soft hand, great durability, high opacity on different colors and types of apparel, print full color.d
Durability: withstands 50+ wash/dry cycles. It is highly recommended that care instructions for garments be followed. This includes - cold wash, no bleach or fabric softener, low heat dry, and no ironing.
Recommended Fabrics: cotton, polyester, cotton/poly blends, tri-blends, Lycra/Spandex.
Artwork must be high resolution (300 dpi)
This is a full color including white with a very high resolution process. This process is great for full-color photographs, multi-color logos, or artwork with a lot of color and color bleeds. The feel of the process is noticeable especially if the design is large. This is an extremely cost-effective application and the minimum order quantities are appealing.
Embroidery Application
Pros - Beautiful and very long-lasting if care instructions are followed. Few limitations to garment color or material
Cons - Setup charges, Artwork charges. Limits to maximum colors. Orders can take longer to fill. More expensive than most embellishments
Embroidery is the art of embellishing a piece of apparel with a needle and thread or yarn creating stunning visual representations of various types of art. This is achieved by converting logos in a digitizing software and using various stitch patterns, angles, densities, and stitch types to create depth, movement, and detail. Thread can be made from many materials. The most commonly used threads are polyester and rayon. There are also options such as metallic, cotton, nylon, silk, and even Nomex thread for fire resistance. Embroidery has a very high perceived value and is popular for use on most apparel, bags, hats, luggage, blankets, and more!
Sublimation Dye Application
Pros - Quick Availability, Full Color And Economical. Very durable.
Cons - Limited to White Surfaces that are treated or naturally able to accept sublimation.
This is the process of embellishing our slate stone products, drinkware, and many other hard-surface products.
Sublimation is very durable and long-lasting. However, just like most other embellishment processes UV light (sun) can cause premature fading. Our surfaces are treated with UV protection but this can only be helpful for so long. It is best not to use this embellishment process for items expected to be in full sun all the time.
Abrasive, Acidic, bleach cleaning products should be avoided.
Laser Etching / Engraving
Pros - Beautiful and unique. Long-lasting. Few limitations to garment color or material.
Cons - Setup charges, Artwork charges. Delivery of order is timely for smaller orders. Best on more expensive garment materials
Laser etching is a decorating process that burns a pattern into the top layer of material, giving it a subtle tone-on-tone appearance. The image of the etching creates an upscale look that is usually the same color but several shades darker than the original material color. It works well with both big and small logos.
Medium - Large orders can take 2-6 weeks (or more) for delivery.
Surface Applications
Newest Adhesive Applications
Pros - Beautiful and unique. Recent advances in adhesive applications make surface applications a great cost-effective option with small or no setup charges. Durable and if cared for properly, can last a long time. Few limitations to smooth hard surface applications. Great selection of colors.
Cons - (Possible) Setup charges-Artwork charges. Not considered a permanent application because the application can be removed or damaged if not cared for properly. This process is NOT considered dishwasher safe. Gentle handwashing is highly recommended.
Sreen Printing Traditional Application
Pros - Once setup is complete, typically a timely delivery. One or two colors are Economical. No limit to garment colors or material. Very durable
Cons - Setup charges. More than two colors are expensive for small orders. Color changes are treated as new-order designs
An imprinting method in which the image is transferred to the fabric. Ink is squeegeed through a stenciled screen stretched over a frame and then cured in a dryer.
Additional Application Processes
Hard surfaces and different materials offer additional options for embellishment. Not all embellishment processes are available on all products. Final results may have a substantial appearance difference depending upon the product and embellishment process. Differences may be noticeable from one product run to another.
An inked image is transferred from a photo-etched plate to a thin, soft silicone pad, which is then pressed against the part. The pad can wrap itself as much as 180° around a small object, and ink coverage is excellent. One color is printed at a time and registration between colors can be tight.
Imprinting for detailed and multicolor imprints for better appearance on certain substrates. Holds registration on a wide range of surfaces such as: insulated padding, PVC, nylon, neoprene, ABS and more.
Delivers high-resolution photo-quality images on a broad range of products. Make a bold statement. Artwork Requirement: (CMYK) Four-color process.
A technique for leather and other substrates in which a metal die is created from artwork. The die is then heat-pressed into the material, leaving an image of the artwork in a recess creating a classic sophistication.
What are our Primary Processes
Unless additional processes are discussed in a product description or quote, our primary processes for embellishing fabric (soft goods) are DTF, Hybrid DTF, and Sublimation.
Our primary processes for hard goods are Sublimation, Laser Engraving, Vinyl, or other surface applications.
We do have the resources to complete embellishments "in-house". However, we do "outsource" embellishment orders depending on the process needed. All of our outsourcing is within the United States unless specifically described.
UNION BASED SERVICES
If requested, this outsourcing can be an alternative union facility. This may change the prices so please notify us in advance of this request so we can properly quote your needs.
JB Gibson Ventures, LLC
IS NOT A UNION ENTITY.
We appreciate the opportunity to share our experiences about the different embellishments we offer. However, we recommend you look elsewhere for opinions about embellishment types and make an informed decision on the best type to suit your needs and budget.

Information from their website
When you dye sublimate a t-shirt, you get a permanent design that never rubs off. Your design will last as long as the t-shirt does, because dye sub ink stains the individual fibres that make up your t-shirt.
The whole process of dye sublimation relies on special inks that are designed to vaporise at a high temperature. First, your design gets printed onto your blank garment. Next, the garment gets heated up until the dye sub ink transforms from a solid into a gas. This coloured gas is thin enough to penetrate the fibres in the individual threads of your t-shirt, and stain them with whatever colour you choose. When the t-shirt cools down again, the ink solidifies and you’re left with a permanent design that looks great for years to come.
There are a few issues with dye sublimation. You can’t print white, which means that you can’t sublimate on dark shirts. It’s a bit like trying to paint with watercolours on black paper — the artwork just won’t show through . If you want to use dye sub as your tee printing method, you need a white, light grey or pastel-coloured shirt.
Dye sublimation also doesn’t work on cotton t-shirts. The special ink will only bond to polyester. If your tee is a poly-cotton blend of at least 70% polyester you should be OK, but check with your printer first.
Vinyl transfers are like die-cut stickers for your t-shirt. With vinyl, you place your transfer directly onto the fabric of your shirt, then apply heat to get it to stick. Some transfers use heat-activated adhesives, and others will need to be ‘melted’ onto the garment. Either way, your vinyl graphic will sit on top of the fibres of your t-shirt. It won’t penetrate the fibres like dye sublimation.
If you want to print every t-shirt yourself, you could do it using vinyl transfers. You would either need to work with an online vinyl transfer company (someone who can die-cut your vinyl for you and send you a ‘sticker sheet’ of transfers), or you would need to invest in a cutting plotter or cutting machine to die-cut your decals yourself. You would then need a t-shirt heat press to bond the vinyl to each shirt.
Vinyl is a great way to get vivid, punchy colours onto a dark t-shirt. It’s also a very cost-effective option if you’re working with small designs like pocket details and sleeve decals, because you can squeeze lots of die-cut decals onto a single sheet of vinyl.
Screen printing works by cutting out a stencil on a very fine mesh sheet known as a silkscreen. You place that stencil on top of your blank tee, then paint your ink across the stencil to decorate your shirt.
Screen printing gives a softer finish than vinyl, (Vinyl not an option with JB Gibson Ventures) and it works on any type of t-shirt (cotton, poly or blends). It also allows you to print bright colours onto dark tees. If it’s cured correctly, a screen printed t-shirt will look sharp for years.
Screen printing generally only lets you print a 4-colour or 6-colour design, depending on the machinery that your printer is using. It also takes time to set up your kit for the first t-shirt. Every silkscreen needs to be created individually and calibrated, which takes time. As soon as the setup process is complete, you can produce a lot of high-quality tees at speed.
With DTF, or Direct-To-Film, printing, you can pack as many colours as you want onto a t-shirt and achieve high levels of detail too. DTF is a very good compromise between the speed of dye sublimation and the vibrancy and versatility of screen printing.
There’s very little setup work involved in DTF printing. After the printer has finished, you heat the garment, and the ink and treatment form a permanent bond with your t-shirt’s fabric. T
DTF and screen printing deliver very different finishes, so if you’re trying to choose between the two options, get your hands on a sample of each. Your t-shirt will breathe and feel differently depending on which print method you choose.
